An Experience with Sound
The sound exercise done in class taught me that sound is flexible enough to evoke a different mood or ambiance when applied to a movie. It’s even more interesting when you just allow an accident to happen, like pairing sound with a movie that are worlds apart and high in contrast. The challenges I faced were trying to figure out what sounds to combine to achieve the effect I wanted, and manipulating the program to do what I needed. I was successful in recording many fun sounds and finally creating the sound used in my movie. The sound used could be considered to be non-diegetic because the relationship between sound and image sets a background mood. It also makes use of object movement where exaggerated sound was used to emphasize an action. This assignment has made me much more aware of how sound and the lack of it is used, especially in commercials. It’s a very powerful tool and when used to its fullest potential needs little assistance for any visual.
